remember when they started selling beer in big cans, 5 litres or more? very unsophisticated and you had to drink it once it was open. now, years later, we have beer in cans with pressure control and everything required for it to be used over as long a period as necessary. wine in boxes will go the same way; it's just starting.

I buy only bag-in-box wine. I don't buy wine to lay down, I buy wine to drink immediately, and I think that represents most of the wine sold at retail. For me the advantages of bag wine are several: It stays fresh for days if not weeks; I always have a red wine and a white wine on tap so if a recipe calls for a cup of wine, I don't have to decide whether to open a bottle; and finally the price is significantly better. For example, I recently went into a Total Wine store near me to buy some wine. There was a 3 liter bag of a Maipe malbec for $24.99. The same wine was available in a 1.5 liter bottle for $18.99. Why would I pay an additional $13 for a less convenient cork in bottle packaging? Most of the criticism I see of bag-in-box wine is directed at the quality of the wine, rather than the advantages/disadvantages of the packaging, but I think at least 80% of the volume of wine sold would be better packaged in plastic.

Looking forward to other opinions.

Hi Mike,

Great blog! I really love this article, since I think people don't have a great grip on closures/vessels for wine. I worked for a large winery in CA in Brand Marketing and closures were a very hot topic for years. I agree that there will continue to be a variety of options, but I would bet that box wines go on the rise and synthetic corks fall out of favor in the next 5 years. I guess we'll have to see!

I'm going to post on closures today and would love to reference your blog. I hope that's ok by you. Here is my site: winefornormalpeople.blogspot.com

I'm looking forward to reading more of your work!

Wine in a box requires significantly higher levels of sulphur dioxide (2-3X), both because the wine is usually from warmer/hot wine areas and also because the closure and plastic itself allows air in once opened. So there you have it.

I personally don't care what wine comes in as long as it it is good for the wine and just because wine has been bottled in glass under cork for hundreds of years doesn't mean it has to be for hundreds more.

Boxing wine is still uncommon in the halls of Washington DC. It takes months to get a box's design approved by the feds. The initial outlay for boxes and bags in bulk does set the small winery back a bit, but changes take time to market I guess.

So with that being said there are a few Idaho wines that will be boxed up for sale in summer 2010. North End Boxer from Bitner Vineyards is one label and compares with Washington labels.

I too have a concern about the plastic. Today I emailed Boho and inquired about the kind of plastic used, which should give us some idea of how safe these wines actually are. In general, plastics marked with Codes 2, 4, and 5.
