I spent a lot of time last year looking for ways to help Uruguayan wineries get their product into the U.S. The $3 per bottle is FOB. Add shipping and U.S. and state compliance costs and the importer is looking at $6 per bottle in his warehouse. Wholesale mark up and retail mark up and the bottle sells for more like $15. Currency fluctuations don't help either. One day the FOB cost of a bottle is $4 and a couple of days later it is $4.50. Everyone has to build in margins along the way.

As an importer in the US, it sounds to me that these poor Argentinians are being used and abused by their importers as I don't see how a $3.00 wines from Argentina would retail for $11.00 except maybe in Florida or Pennsylvania. This is a perfect example of the importers using their understanding of the Three Tier system and their mapping of the US to sell a know-how where they make huge margins off wine producing countries (this is also good for most other countries from the New and Old world).
This is just sad for the producer who does not get his fair share and the final consumer that doesn't get the value...
